Great Ethiopian Run Provides Avenue for Peaceful Protest

Today at 8:30am, an estimated 25 000 people gathered in Meskel Square to participate in the annual Great Ethiopian Run. However, almost immediately after the race began, the crowd seized the long-awaited opportunity to peacefully protest the escalating brutality of the EPRDF regime--demanding the immediate release of all political prisoners and an end to the dictatorial rule of Meles Zenawi.

Shouts of “Kinijit is back!” and “Give power to the educated!” mingled with slogans denouncing the Somalian invasion, and strains of peaceful hymns filled the air. Local police officers looked on in amazement as crowds swarmed the front of the ETV building, peacefully expressing their dissatisfaction and thanking Haile Gebre-Selassie for providing the opportunity to speak out against the mounting political oppression.

It is a wonderful day in Addis!

my fear is now the underground wing of the ruthless tyrant will hunt those kids one by one. The good thing is the minority racist dictator populated by banda descendants and his followers will not be able to kill 70 million people. i hope they are thinkg what to do when they loose power ! I hope Ethiopians will be less harsh on them.

Ye Dessie Lej,

Thanks youths (residents) of Addis for your determination and courage to make a demonistration to denounce the administration of Melles. However these stupid TPLF officials and their criminal cadres donot know what a peacful demonistration mean. So you should start an organized armed struggle today not tommorow to enjoy your life with freedom rather than being humilated by TPLF (Tigrians)members.

Actully, todays protest is the first step (one step ahead) for the enevitable tommorow's bitter struggle.

If you be careless for your freedom you will remain slave of Woyanes. That is why the Ethiopian Army ignoring the struggle of the population for freedom against Tyrant Woyane members has been deployed in the land of Somalia for death. The national Army betrayed the population will always face such a death penalty in one way or the other.

Always the mass is the winner
Dawn with TPLF

It was a wonderful opportunty to express the heartfelt support for those who are langishing in Kaliti and showng this reckless tirant how he is hated and hated to depth. But I have a big fear that the mad dogs start to come after this precious man, Haile, as they did to the others like Tedi. So Haile watchout when you drive not to hit even a dead dog.

Thank you my sisters and brothers for your continuous courage doing these protests. Hope things will change for better. Eventually, the entire political dilemma that we had for years will come to end and Ethiopia will be “The Land of Freedom”. Education is a key for the correct political administration and we have those people who can do the job right. Thank you for peaceful demonstration. Just little advice from what I noticed in the past demonstrations, it is important to do peaceful demonstration with respect. It is ok to be angry and we have a right to be angry however, using bad words or picking on specific tribes can not bring any solution. Remember we all are Ethiopians. We need to learn to respect and love each other. Also this is not a matter of wining and loosing it is about change. It is always in my prayer to God, to bring us peace and to let them free all the educated political prisoners.
