I wish I could hear more from Mr. Sachs, not because I expect any good from him but just to see if he would respond to the critical issues you insisted him to address. Understandably, he brushed them all along aside. I did not expect this from an academician.

DemissAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37179356.post-1168157658922060382007-01-07T08:14:00.000+00:002007-01-07T08:14:00.000+00:00Anonymous above,As much as I would like to believe...Anonymous above,

As much as I would like to believe that we should take JS out and deal with Meles, in terms of the damage they are causing, the two are becoming the same so long as JS is helping Meles execute. JS is well educated and widely recognized for his intense interest in Africa. He is immensely trusted and relied upon as the chief advisor and problem solver to western powers that finance Meles. He squanders such trust and enables one of the world’s biggest dictator and terrorist to thrive, pressing for millions of aid money that he knows is being used to accumulate wealth among the mafia few EPRDFs and to kill the rest. Knowing all the ills, he declares Ethiopia has never had it so good. Why? Unrestrained ambition may be? He should know his actions have implications and are becoming increasingly painful. As a matter of fact, we should make it our job to get him out of Africa. He refuses to be accountable and can’t answer a single specific question about his actions. Yes, if it was any man I agree we should leave him alone but as somehow with such stature, we must demand more.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37179356.post-1168060313162092262007-01-06T05:11:00.000+00:002007-01-06T05:11:00.000+00:00Selam Mengedegna,The Professor purposley tried to ...Selam Mengedegna,
The Professor purposley tried to ignore the issues and questions you were raising. It helps us learn how outsiders who have good intentions ( I want to believe that ) look at our situation and come up with their own way of solving the problem. The thing is they cannot learn some of the very basic and clear things that is very obvious to us insiders.
I do not want to attack this professor for anything. I do not expect him to understand the intricacies of our society and I do not expect him to side with the people. After all he is doing his work not ours. He cannot see things from our point of view. He may be looking at his marvelous work of grand statue that will bring him his dream fame or something. Let us all, Ethiopian readers understand that this is our problem. The solution will not come from an academician who has his own agenda. Of course there are admirable individuals that go beyond their call of duty and do good for others. In our case Addis Ferenji will be one, in Algeria Frantz Fanon will be one ……etc.
The lesson for us, fellow Ethiopians, is this is our struggle, if others help fine, but the primary force is us. Let us leave JS and Yara. We have the real enemy of the people to struggle against and we have the people of Ethiopia at the forefront of the struggle. This struggle is not an academic struggle this is a real struggle where thousands are being killed. It is Ethiopia and it is not a page in a book.
Thank you again Mengedegna for your noble work.
Ethiopians will winAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37179356.post-1167886830323420922007-01-04T05:00:00.000+00:002007-01-04T05:00:00.000+00:00Thanks Mengedegna for sharing your exchanges with ...Thanks Mengedegna for sharing your exchanges with Jeffery Sachs. I will share it with as many people as possible. The day of reckoning might be delayed but for sure will come. What is killing us is not only the Meles regime at home, but the so many experts who gain fame at the expense of the poor. If JS is really concerned about poverty and his initial motive was to alleviate it, at one point, he should realize the damage that he had done by holding Meles in the highest esteem that he doesen’t deserve. Therefore, he should admit his mistakes as a gentleman instead or arguing with you and moving around in circles.

Thanks again.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37179356.post-1167846236857505632007-01-03T17:43:00.000+00:002007-01-03T17:43:00.000+00:00Well well i read your exchanges with Prof Sacks wi...Well well i read your exchanges with Prof Sacks with interest. The situation since then worsened but not improved. To solve the world food problem with "friendly tyrannts" is not possible. But the "good guy" Prof. Sachs does not have the gut to tell the truth. If he tells the truth he will not be promoted and praised. Another "distinguished" Henry Kissingerf (also for others he should appear to the international court of justice for all his crimes he committed against humanity) recommends war, hunger and aids to reduce world population. The only difference between 1974 and 2007 is that one "friendly tyrannt" (Mobutu) or "tyrannt" (Mengistu) is replaced by another "friendly tyrannt" - Meles Zenawi

His contribution to Poland and Bolivia may be appreciated but his book about hunger is useless unless he tells the truth. A free and democratic government is a prequisite for sustainable development. Don`t tell me the case of South Korea and Taiwan that is a special case with an occupation and massive investment from the U.S. to show how capitalism is better than communism is atypical. I know the case of West Berlin before the fall of the Berlin Wall and now.

Iraq was also better developed as compared to other Arab countries but due to dictatorship what has been done over the years is now destroyed.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37179356.post-1167808284075800442007-01-03T07:11:00.000+00:002007-01-03T07:11:00.000+00:00Mengedegna, I can't thank you enough for exposing ...Mengedegna, I can't thank you enough for exposing Jeffrey Sachs. His governance standard is relative to other worst leaders at best, he might as well compare Meles to Nazi and approve accordingly. (He might already be doing so) - I believe the old ways of solving the Africa problem is done. It is not acceptable by the 75 million Ethiopian people he claims to be helping - he prescribes bed nets to a kid who gets shot dead for walking the streets of addis by his own government. May be the bed nets are for the visitors like JS. Is he so blind? Is it even possible - we need to get his credit away and people like you with the new form of media and true committment will help us do so. We can no longer rely on the mainstream media to inform us just as Jeffery Sachs should wake up and smell the coffee if he is to protect his stature. For more you can read papers by Dani Rodrik (which actually co-taught with Sachs at Harvard) which suggests that institutions are more important. Thank for pointing out such deficiencies about his speech on good-governance.

I am wondering if you could get a report on Koraro. Sometime ago I read one and whereas villagers were supposed to be in charged, the transcripts showed that everything was directed by the Ethiopian prof. in charge of the project. Also is it a surprise that the project was chosen in Koraro? while local administration in other regions are just full-time EPRDF cadres. Maybe you should send him the video of the story Addis Ferenji dug out about the local cadres killing an opposition farmer... http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1994578533314383765&q=ethiopia

On the other hand, you must keep in mind that Sachs, a well-established economist, has turned into a preacher/prophet blinded by his theories and environment. I don't know about his real endeavor nowadays, now that he is a prophet... he enjoyed to much his stardom along other celebrities/activists such as Angelina Jolie and Bono.

Eventually, he is not stranger to controversy. The matter is that he was kicked out of Harvard (we are talking about a full prof with Chair) because of gross mis-management in the HIID project in Russia. While he was in charge of helping Russia in the early 90's right after the fall of USRR, he advised the government with a shock therapy on deregulation and monetary policies that led to one of the worst financial/economics crisis. Furthermore, there was some weird issues with some insider trading with someone in his family running a hedge fund on Russia.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
